Patrick Pogan - NYPD

Critical Mass Bicyclist assulted by NYPD officer Patrick Pogan

Here are the facts:

  • Group of cyclist known as Critical Mass rides through roads of Manhattan, NY on July 25, 2008 as part of monthly awareness ride.
  • Christopher Long, 29, of Hoboken, NJ is among the cyclists.
  • Christopher rides through Times Square.
  • NYPD officer named Patrick Pogan body checks Christopher off the bike onto a sidewalk.
  • Christopher is arrested with 1 count of attempted assault in the third degree, 1 count of resisting arrest and 1 count of disorderly conduct.
  • Patrick Pogan’s sworn statement reads,
"... defendant steered the defendant's bicycle in the direction of [Officer Pogan] and drove defendant's bicycle directly into [his] body, causing [the officer] to suffer lacerations on [his] forearms."
  • A bystander videotapes the incident and post on the YouTube.
  • Video is viewed some 1.5 million times.
  • Criminal court judge James Burke drops the charges against Christopher.
  • Officer Pogan is stripped of his badge and gun and assigned to desk duty.

The primary disturbing part is that an NYPD officer deliberately knocks down a cyclist then makes up a story to arrest an innocent person. As a citizen of a democratic country, there is an underlying faith that a police officer should uphold the law, not abuse his power. We can go on and on about how wrong these cases are, how guilty Officer Pogan is, and what should be done to Pogan for justice. The fortunate twist in this case is that a bystander happened to video tape the incident and the evidence was available to public. The shear weight of the evidence was enough to right the wrong and save an innocent man.

The sad truth is that injustices occur every day to cyclist by police officer, rode rage driver, maniacs and others. For every one case of Christopher, there are countless cases where there is no evidence or justice. There is never going to be proper justice for all the wrongs done to cyclist in this lifetime. In the final analysis, all men are cursed with fallen nature that is evil to the very core of what it means to be a human. God help us all.

Well, Officer Pogan was graced with overflowing stupidity and bad luck. For that, Patrick Pogan earns the spot on the Hall of Shame.

Shame on you Patrick Pogan. You suck!
